Taking temperature of coconut soy candle wax before pouring melted wax into container.

What do you mean there's science and math involved in candle making?

Candle making is a match made in heaven for this science nerd.

Candle making is a fascinating process that combines science and creativity in a unique way. When it comes to using coconut soy wax, the importance of fragrance load, temperature, and testing cannot be overstated. It's like conducting a science experiment in your own kitchen!

First things first, let's talk wax. I chose coconut soy wax, which is becoming a popular choice among candle makers because it burns cleanly and has a great scent throw. Each wax can hold a different amount of fragrance oil. The math involved to calculate how much wax and fragrance oil can go into each candle to have just the right proportions will remind you of the time you cried doing algebra homework swearing "I'll never even have to use this!"

Now on to temperature. Temperature may be the single most important factor in making a successful candle. Every step must be executed perfectly. The temperature at which you heat the wax, add the fragrance oil, add the color, and even pour into the container can drastically affect the candles performance? Oh and the temperature of the room, even the humidity can affect the way your candle performs. It's true! Heating the wax too high a temperature can cause it to discolor or even burn, not heating to a high enough temperature can affect the way the fragrance oil adheres to the wax molecules potentially ruining your scent throw. Having the room too cold the candle hardens too fast, creating sinkholes in the candle.

Once you've got your candle ready to go, it's time to start testing. This is where the fun (and the real science) comes in. The entire process, like a recipe, is documented and put to the test. The candle is burned from beginning to end documenting each hour to ensure its burning safely. It's burned in ideal conditions, 3-4 hours at a time and trimming the wick each time (like the warning label says!) and burning it like a normal consumer usually burns their candles...sometimes an hour or two, sometimes a whole day and sometimes they forget about it all together until it goes out on its own. We ensure the candle will perform safely in all conditions.
